Massu defeated Chris Guccione 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (2) and Gonzalez, the Olympic silver medalist, went on to beat Peter Luckzak 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
Massu needed more than three hours to overcome Guccione’s powerful serve, with the Australian hitting 22 aces in the windy conditions. Both players held serve throughout the first two sets before Guccione got his first break to take a 4-2 lead in the third, which was enough to clinch the set.
Gonzalez held his serve throughout the match and broke Luckzak’s once in the first and second sets and twice in the third.

Ancic, Karlovic give Croatia 2-0 lead vs Brazil.
Mario Ancic and Ivo Karlovic needed two tiebreaks each to give Croatia a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the Davis Cup World Group playoff Friday.
Karlovic, ranked 14th, did not drop his serve throughout his match against Thiago Alves, eventually prevailing 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Ancic, playing his first singles match after a two-month absence because of illness, defeated Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-2, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
Ancic cruised to a 4-0 lead before closing out the first set, and had a match point at 5-2 in the third before Bellucci rallied to force the second tiebreaker.
Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko take on Brazil’s Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa in the doubles on Saturday.
