The Carolina Hurricanes on Monday signed left wing Dan LaCouture to a one-year contract.
The deal will pay LaCouture $475,000 on the NHL level or $50,000 on the American Hockey League level, with a guarantee of at least $75,000 during the 2008-09 season.

Dan came to our camp in great physical condition and earned himself a contract, assistant general manager Ron Francis said. He is an experienced, veteran player with good speed and size and is capable of contributing on the NHL level.

LaCouture, 31, has totaled 18 goals and 43 points with 338 penalty minutes in 326 career games with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils.

Mark Bell: Placed on Waivers.

Bell has been placed on waivers, reports the Toronto Star.
If he goes unclaimed, he could be sent to the AHL Marlies. He didnt perform well in San Jose under coach Ron Wilson and Wilsons arrival in Toronto certainly couldnt have been good for the once-troubled winger. His fantasy value goes from little to nil.

Pavel Datsyuk: Back in Action.

Datsyuk (groin) returned to action for the preseason finale on Sunday, the Detroit News reports.
Other than missing out on some practice games to build rapport with new winger Marian Hossa, were not really concerned about Datsyuks limited preseason work heading into the regular season opener later this week.

Chris Drury: 10 Shots in Opener.

Drury, named captain of the Rangers before their season opener in Prague, recorded 10 shots on goal but was held without a point over the Rangers first two games.
With Jaromir Jagr gone, Drury is one of the Rangers expected to pick up the scoring slack. Expect him to regain the 30-goal form he had in Buffalo, but not before he adjusts to playing the wing.
