(1) UNC 77, KENTUCKY 58
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina Deon Thompson scored a career-high 18 points as top-ranked North Carolina started fast before winning big in a matchup with Kentucky, 77-58.
It was a lopsided affair throughout despite the fact that the Tar Heels (2-0) were forced to play without Tyler Hansbrough, last years consensus national Player of the Year, for a second straight game due to a stress reaction in his right shin.
The 6-8 Thompson picked up the slack inside, scoring three times in the opening 2 1/2 minutes and contributed 10 points on a 23-4 run that made it 25-6 with 11:34 remaining. UNC held a 41-25 advantage at the half.
Wayne Ellington scored 16 points and Ty Lawson added 13 for UNC, which forced 28 turnovers en route to career win No. 1,952.
The Tar Heels still trail the Wildcats by 14 wins for the all-time record of 1,966, but have been coming on strong due to their recent yearly meetings, as UNC has won the last five.
Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson each scored 19 points for Kentucky (0-2).
(14) OKLAHOMA 82, (21) DAVIDSON 78
NORMAN, Oklahoma Blake Griffin had 25 points and 21 rebounds as No. 14 Oklahoma held on for an 82-78 victory over Stephen Curry and 21st-ranked Davidson in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
The sophomore forwards third straight monster double-double helped offset Currys career-high 44 points.
Freshman Willie Warren scored 20 points and Taylor Griffin added 16 for the Sooners (3-0), who will play the winner of Alabama-Birmingham and Arizona in the semifinals in New York City on November 26.
The first matchup of ranked teams this season did not disappoint as Oklahoma (3-0) led throughout the second half – and by as much as 61-40 with 13:12 remaining – before Davidson fought back to come within 79-76 on Currys sixth 3-pointer with 56 seconds remaining.
Tony Crocker missed a 3-pointer from the corner on the Sooners next possession, but Blake Griffin pulled down the offensive rebound and Cade Davis sank a pair of free throws to give Oklahoma an 81-76 lead with 24 seconds to play.
Davidson (2-1), which was outrebounded, 43-31, never had the ball with a chance to tie the contest, snapping its 21-game regular-season winning streak.
(8) TEXAS 76, TULANE 51
AUSTIN, Texas Damion James scored 16 points and A.J. Abrams added 15, leading No. 8 Texas to a 76-51 victory over Tulane.
Connor Atchley had 12 points and Gary Johnson chipped in 11 for the Longhorns (2-0), who shot 48 percent from the floor (27-of-56) and had five players in double figures.
The Longhorns removed any suspense from this one early. Abrams scored eight of his 10 first-half points during a 21-6 run that put his team ahead, 31-14, with 7:47 to play.
Kevin Sims scored 11 points and was the lone player in double figures for Tulane (1-1), which was facing Texas for the first time since 1973.
(10) PURDUE 78, LOYOLA OF CHICAGO 46
WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana Keaton Grant scored eight of his 11 points in the first half as No. 10 Purdue had no trouble posting a 78-46 victory over Loyola of Chicago in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
ETwaun Moore scored 14 points and Robbie Hummel added 13 as Boilermakers (3-0) secured a spot in the semifinal round at Madison Square Garden on November 26. They will face Boston College, an 82-70 winner over St. Johns.
The Ramblers took a 4-2 lead less than two minutes in before the Boilermakers took over, pulling ahead 30-9 with 4:20 left before halftime after Grant connected on a pair of 3-pointers during a 28-5 run.
Justin Cerasoli scored 14 points for Loyola (1-2).
(11) GONZAGA 80, IDAHO 46
SPOKANE, Washington Micah Downs scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half and Austin Daye added 16 as 11th-ranked Gonzaga cruised to an 80-46 victory over Idaho.
Josh Heytvelt scored 15 points and Steven Gray chipped in 11 for the Bulldogs (2-0), who scored the games first 17 points and held Idaho without a field goal for the first 8:21 of the contest.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 47-11 at the break and cruised throughout the second half.
Mac Hopson scored 19 points to lead the Vandals (1-2), who shot 30 percent (14-of-47) from the floor.
(13) TENNESSEE 91, UT-MARTIN 64
KNOXVILLE, Tennessee Sophomore Brian Williams had a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds and Tyler Smith added 19 points as No. 13 Tennessee cruised from start to finish for a 91-64 victory over Tennessee-Martin.
J.P. Prince scored 11 points off the bench and Wayne Chism had 11 and 10 rebounds for the Volunteers (2-0), who held the Skyhawks to 28 percent (21-of-74) shooting from the floor.
Tennessee jumped out to leads of 14-2 and 27-6 and was never threatened during the second half after holding a 57-31 advantage at the break.
Lester Hudson scored 20 points to lead Tennessee-Martin (1-1).
(20) USC 73, NEW MEXICO STATE 60
LOS ANGELES Taj Gibson recorded 22 points and 10 rebounds, helping No. 20 Southern California hold off upset-minded New Mexico State, 73-60.
Dwight Lewis had 16 points and Daniel Hackett added 10 for the Trojans (2-0), who hit 26-of-36 free throws to offset a poor shooting night.
Jahmar Young scored 16 points for the Aggies (1-1), who used a 36-point second half to stay within striking distance until late.
(22) WISCONSIN 88, SIU-EDWARDSVILLE 58
MADISON, Wisconsin Twenty-second ranked Wisconsin surged to an 88-58 victory over SIU-Edwardsville.
Jon Leuer came off the bench to score 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting for the Badgers (2-0). Marcus Landry added 15 as Wisconsin grabbed a 40-21 lead at the half and coasted home.
On Friday, the Badgers head to St. Thomas Virgin Islands to face Iona in the first round of the Paradise Jam Tournament .
The Cougars, who are in their first year in Division I, were paced by Barry Wellington with 15 points.
(24) KANSAS 85, FLORIDA GULF COAST 45
LAWRENCE, Kansas Sherron Collins scored 25 points as No. 24 Kansas crushed Florida Gulf Coast, 85-45.
The Jayhawks hit 16-of-32 from the field in the opening 20 minutes while limiting the Eagles from the Atlantic Sun
Conference to 3-of-25 (12 percent). The Eagles actually scored more points from the free-throw line (7) than they did from the field (6) in the first half en route to trailing, 45-13, at intermission.
Collins had 18 of his points in the first half. The 5-11 junior hit 9-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-6 from behind the
arc.
The Eagles were led by Reed Baker with nine points. He was 3-of-16 from the floor.
