Borussia Dortmund beat Karlsruhe 1-0 to move into provisional fourth place in the Bundesliga on Friday.
Mohamed Zidan scored in the 20th minute, using a cross from Tamas Hajnal, a former Karlsruhe player, to seal Dortmund’s victory.
Karlsruhe lost its seventh game in its last eight, and was 16th in the 18-team standings, only one point above Arminia Bielefeld and Energie Cottbus, who play on Saturday.
While Karlsruhe tried to equalize in the second half, Dortmund squandered half a dozen opportunities off counterattacks to post a bigger victory.

Donovan to join Bayern on loan.
Landon Donovan will join German champion Bayern Munich in a loan deal similar to the one David Beckham has agreed with AC Milan, according to Bayern’s manager Uli Hoeness, but no other players will come or go from the club during the winter transfer period.
“He (Donovan) will in any case now play for us until March 15,” Hoeness said in an interview posted Friday on the Web site of the Munich-based Sueddeutsche newspaper.
The U.S. forward has just concluded a 10-day practice stint with Bayern, ostensibly to keep fit.
Both Donovan and Beckham play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer.
Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann had said previously he was interested in keeping Donovan until the end of the season. Donovan has a contract with MLS until 2011.
Donovan can play as a forward or midfielder. He led the league with 20 goals in 25 games for the Galaxy this season, has just been voted American football’s Player of the Year for a record fifth time and is the U.S. national team’s all-time leading scorer.
It will be Donovan’s third attempt to break through in the Bundesliga. His previous two attempts, both with Bayer Leverkusen, were failures.
Hoeness told the newspaper Bayern would make no other transfers until the summer and would not release any players, including striker Lukas Podolski, who will get more competition now from Donovan. Klinsmann has used Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose as starting forwards and Podolski has said he was not happy with the situation and might consider a move.
There has also been speculation that Bayern may allow 18-year-old Toni Kroos to join another club on loan to get match practice.
“That was his idea,” Hoeness said in dismissing the move.
Hoeness said Bayern’s front office had decided not to make any moves in the transfer market until the summer.
“We sat down together this week and decided that, as things stand now, we will not bring anyone or let anyone go this winter,” Hoeness said.
