Celtic fan jailed over Champions League incident. A Celtic fan whose Champions League pitch invasion led to the Scottish club being fined by UEFA was jailed for six months Friday and banned from matches for five years.

John Murphy ran across the Celtic Park pitch during the Nov. 5 match against Manchester United, which ended 1-1.

The 18-year-old from Glasgow, who had already admitted charges of breaching the peace and being intoxicated in a sports ground, said he could not remember the incident because he had been consuming alcohol since 11 a.m.

“Not only did you create a situation in which there were fears for the safety of the players on the pitch, but you interrupted a high-profile match and created a situation which might easily have provoked serious public disorder,” Sheriff Linda Ruxton told Glasgow Sheriff Court. “Furthermore, you brought Scottish football generally and Celtic Football Club in particular into disrepute and your behavior caused the club to be fined a substantial amount.”

UEFA fined Celtic ?50,000 $62,600), including ?20,000 ($25,000) that had been suspended following a similar incident last season, when a fan invaded the pitch and clashed with AC Milan goalkeeper Dida.

Eddie Robertson, representing Murphy, said his client had written to apologize to Celtic.

“Mr. Murphy realizes that Celtic have paid a major penalty for this financially and also their reputation has been tarnished,” Robertson said. “He is deeply sorry for what he has done.”
