Peterson headed back to ASU
April 29th, 2009 Posted in NCAA basketball news, NCAA college basketballAfter 43 days on the search for a head coach, reports that Charlotte Bobcats Director of Player Personnel Buzz Peterson will be the next head coach at Appalachian State have been confirmed by sources. ASU spokesman Mike Flynn has not confirmed that Peterson is in fact the Mountaineers choice, but has acknowledged a press release regarding ASUs 15th head coach will be released Wednesday morning.
Flynn confirmed that due to scheduling conflicts, a press conference would not take place this week. A time for a conference has yet to be determined.
The Winston-Salem Journal first reported that Peterson would be the next coach earlier today.
Peterson, who turned down the Mountaineers initial offer prior to the Easter holiday, almost immediately expressed an interest in renegotiating the contract offered to him by ASU officials.
There was some reluctance to rework the contract, thus leading the Mountaineers athletic administration to interview other candidates. Two of those names, Pat Kelsey and Ed Conroy, quickly took their names out the mix leaving App State with Watkins and their first choice Buzz Peterson still interested.
Peterson has posted a record of 201-134 in 11 seasons as a head coach in the collegiate ranks.
