AUSTIN, Texas -Damion James scored 26 points, including seven in overtime, and top-ranked Texas survived its first week at No 1 with a tough 72-67 win over Texas AM on Saturday night.

James made a 3-pointer with a minute left in overtime and blocked a 3-point attempt by Texas AMs B.J. Holmes that would have tied the game in the final seconds.

JCovan Brown made two free throws with 3 seconds left to seal the win for the Longhorns (17-0, 3-0 Big 12). Gary Johnson added 18 points for Texas.

Donald Sloan scored 21 points for the Aggies (12-5, 1-2), who didnt trail in the game until James first basket of overtime.

Texas earned its first No. 1 ranking in school history with a 15-0 start, then found itself in tough games on the road at Iowa State and at home against their big rivals.

The Longhorns had to fight hard to earn another week at the top.

No. 2 Kentucky 92, Auburn 67

AUBURN, Ala. – John Wall hit two free throws with 8.9 seconds left to help Kentucky remain unbeaten.

The Wildcats (18-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) secured coach John Caliparis 52nd consecutive victory in a regular-season conference game at Memphis and Kentucky, breaking Adolph Rupps NCAA record.

DeMarcus Cousins had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Wildcats.

DeWayne Reed led Auburn with 19 points.

No. 3 Kansas 89, Texas Tech 63

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Marcus Morris had 20 points and Xavier Henry added 14 to help Kansas overcame a sloppy start.

Kansas (16-1, 2-0 Big 12) extended its nation-best home winning streak to 52 straight.

John Roberson had 16 points for Texas Tech (12-5, 0-3), which has lost 11 straight at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Red Raiders, who lost by 58 points here two years ago, opened conference play with three straight losses for the first time since an 0-9 start in 1999-2000.

No. 5 Syracuse 72, No. 10 West Virginia 71

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Brandon Triche scored 16 points for Syracuse, which nearly blew a 10-point lead in the final minute before beating the Mountaineers for the 11th time in 12 meetings.

Kris Joseph and Wes Johnson added 13 points apiece for Syracuse (17-1, 4-1 Big East), which led 65-55 with 1:18 remaining after a free throw by Johnson.

Darryl Bryant led West Virginia (13-3, 4-2) with 18 points and he hit two 3-pointers in the final 33 seconds, including one with 3 seconds left for the final margin.

It was the first matchup between top 10 teams in Morgantown since 1960, when the third-ranked Mountaineers beat No. 9 Villanova in Jerry Wests senior year.

Northwestern 72, No. 6 Purdue 64

EVANSTON, Ill. – Michael Thompson scored 20 points and freshman Drew Crawford had a key 3-pointer and a three-point play in the final 2:04 to help send Purdue to a third straight loss.

Purdue (14-3, 2-3 Big Ten) has its first three-game losing streak since dropping five straight in 2006 at the end of coach Matt Painters first season.

ETwaun Moore scored 24 points for Purdue and Robbie Hummel had 20.

Northwestern (13-4, 2-3) finally beat a ranked team on its home court for the first time in four tries this season after losing to Butler, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

No. 7 Michigan St. 73, Illinois 63

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Kalin Lucas shook off a slow start and scored 20 points and Michigan State (15-3, 5-0 Big Ten) broke a first-place tie in the conference.

The Spartans closed the first half with an 18-5 run – taking a 36-29 lead – and scored the first seven points after the break.

Demetri McCamey scored 15 points for Illinois (12-6, 4-1).

No. 9 Tennessee 71, No. 21 Mississippi 69, OT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Wayne Chism scored 26 points, including six consecutive free throws in overtime and had 12 rebounds for Tennessee.

The Volunteers (14-2, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) had hit only 60 percent of their free throws before DeAundre Cranstons fifth foul sent Chism to the line with 49 seconds left and the game tied at 65. Chism was perfect on all 10 of his free throw attempts in the game.

Chris Warren, who missed what would have been a game-winning 3-point shot just before time expired, led the Rebels (13-4, 1-2) with 19 points, while Cranston grabbed 11 rebounds.

No. 20 Georgia Tech 73, No. 12 North Carolina 71

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Zachery Peacock made the go-ahead shot with 25.7 seconds left to rescue No. 20 Georgia Tech, which blew a 20-point first-half lead before holding on for its first win at North Carolina since 1996.

Iman Shumpert finished with a career-high 30 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (13-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Will Graves had 22 of his career-high 24 points in the second half to lead the Tar Heels (12-6, 1-2), but he missed a desperation 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

The Tar Heels were coming off an 83-64 loss at Clemson on Wednesday night, the most lopsided defeat for the Tar Heels in seven seasons under coach Roy Williams.

No. 13 Kansas St. 87, Colorado 81

BOULDER, Colo. – Jacob Pullen scored 18 points and Denis Clemente added 15 as Kansas State (15-2, 2-1 Big 12) handed the Buffs their first loss at the Coors Events Center in 10 games this season.

The Buffaloes hadnt started 10-0 at home since the arena opened in 1979-80.

Cory Higgins scored a season-best 30 points for Colorado (10-7, 1-2), which upset Baylor on Tuesday night and was seeking to beat ranked teams in consecutive games for the first time in the programs history.

Ohio St. 60, No. 13 Wisconsin 51

COLUMBUS, Ohio – David Lighty helped Ohio State weather Evan Turners foul trouble, scoring 18 points to lead the Buckeyes to their second win over a ranked opponent this week.

Turner had 15 points despite finishing with four fouls, and William Buford added 12 rebounds for the Buckeyes (13-5, 3-3 Big Ten), who have righted themselves after losing three of four while Turner was coming back from broken bones in his back.

Trevon Hughes had 18 points and Jason Bohannon 10 for the Badgers (14-4, 4-2), playing their second game without second-leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and leading rebounder (6.2 rpg) Jon Leuer, who fractured his left wrist a week earlier.

No. 16 Pittsburgh 82, Louisville 77, OT

PITTSBURGH – Nasir Robinson scored a career-high 26 points and Pittsburgh staged a frantic rally in the final minute of regulation to force overtime.

Pitt (15-2, 5-0 Big East) won its eighth straight overall and 31st consecutive at the Petersen Events Center – the second-longest streak in major college basketball to Kansas 52.

Samardo Samuels scored 25 points for Louisville (12-6, 3-2), which was ahead 68-63 with 34 seconds remaining.

Brad Wanamaker scored 20 points for the Panthers, including the five points they needed to get to overtime after Louisville missed four of five free throws in the final 42 seconds of regulation.

No. 17 Gonzaga 68, San Diego 50

SAN DIEGO – Elias Harris scored 20 points and Steven Gray added 17 to lead Gonzaga to its sixth straight victory.

Demetri Goodson added 12 points for the Bulldogs (14-3, 3-0 West Coast Conference). Matt Bouldin was held to six points, well below his team-leading 15.9 average. Center Robert Sacre had 10 rebounds, six points, four blocked shots and three assists.

DeJon Jackson scored 14 points for San Diego (8-12, 1-2).

No. 18 BYU 91, Colorado St. 47

PROVO, Utah – Jimmer Fredette scored 21 points and BYU matched the best start in school history.

Fredettes long jumper and defensive play was part of a decisive 17-2 run at the end of the first half as the Cougars (18-1, 3-0 Mountain West Conference) pulled away for their 13th straight victory.

Greg Smith scored 13 points to lead Colorado State (11-6, 2-1).

Fredettes big game was the first time he scored more than eight points since scoring a school-record 49 against Arizona on Dec. 28.

BYU started the 1987-88 season with an 18-1 record, climbing to No. 2 in the AP poll.

No. 19 Temple 76, Massachusetts 64

PHILADELPHIA – Ryan Brooks hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points to lead Temple.

Brooks became the 45th player in school history to score 1,000 points. He needed 14 entering the game and reached the milestone late in the first half when his fourth 3 of the game gave him exactly 1,000 and the Owls (15-3, 3-0 Atlantic 10) a 30-13 lead.

Temple led by as many as 22 points in its 11th win in the last 12 games. The Owls made 14 of 25 3-pointers. Brooks was two off Temples single-game mark for 3s.

Anthony Gurley scored 20 points for UMass (7-10, 1-3).

No. 22 Baylor 83, Oklahoma St. 70

WACO, Texas – LaceDarius Dunn had his third consecutive 20-point game, finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds for Baylor.

Dunn put the Bears (14-2, 2-1 Big 12) ahead to stay when his 3-pointer with 11 minutes left broke a 53-all tie.

Anthony Jones had 16 points for Baylor, which won its 10th consecutive home game while rebounding from a loss at Colorado on Tuesday night that ended its nine-game winning streak. Ekpe Udoh had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Obi Muonelo led Oklahoma State (13-4, 1-2) with 21 points and James Anderson, the Big 12 scoring leader at 21.7 points per game, had 20.

Virginia 75, No. 23 Miami 57

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sylven Landesberg scored 18 points and surprising Virginia won its seventh straight game and remained the only unbeaten team in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Cavaliers (11-4, 3-0 ACC) improved to 3-0 against ranked teams, holding the Hurricanes to 31.5 percent shooting and finally pulling them away in the final minutes.

Miami (15-3, 1-3) concluded a dismal trip to Virginia. The Hurricanes joined the Top 25 this week for the third year in a row, a first in their history, but trailed at Virginia Tech by as many as 35 in the first half Wednesday night in an 81-66 loss.

No. 24 Clemson 73, N.C. State 70

RALEIGH, N.C. – Trevor Booker scored 20 points and Clemson held on to snap a streak of letdowns following big wins that dated to 1997-98.

Tanner Smith added 11 points,including two late free throws, for the Tigers (15-3, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). They never trailed but blew nearly all of a 21-point lead before coming up with two key defensive stops in the final minute.

Julius Mays had 17 points for the Wolfpack (12-6, 1-3), who trailed 71-70 and missed three shots around Smiths free throws with 18.6 seconds left.

After beating a ranked team, the Tigers had lost the following game 14 consecutive times before this one. They beat North Carolina 83-64 on Wednesday.

No. 25 Florida St 63, Virginia Tech 58

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Solomon Alabi and Deividas Dulkys scored 13 points apiece as Florida State survived a furious last-minute finish to snap a two-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak.

Florida State (14-4, 2-2) led by 10 points before Dorenzo Hudsons layup with 37 seconds left cut the Seminoles lead to 57-49.

Hudson, Terrell Bell and Malcolm Delaney then hit 3-pointers in a 21 second span that brought the Hokies (13-3, 1-2) within one point with four seconds left before Michael Snaers two free throws put the Seminoles up 61-58.

A desperation pass for a possible game-tying shot was intercepted with 2.3 seconds left by Dulkys, who then sank two free throws to ice the game.
